Social media (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, Google+, etc.) has taken many users away from IRC. Couple that with DALnet receiving massive DDoS attacks (from years ago) and DALnet banished file-sharing channels (also years ago). These, and other reasons, got users to find other places to conduct their recreational activities. Alas, all is not grim. DALnet isn't dead. The network, I doubt, will ever see the numbers of users it once did, but there are enough users to make it a viable network.
