/LIST is part of the RFC for IRC. The behavior it is to display is pretty well defined and understood by IRC clients.

In the days before the DDOS attacks of some 5 maybe 6 years ago, DALnet had in excess of 30,000 channels, I never had a problem with /list, always found what i was looking for, plus EG:  /list *aus* or /list *chat* etc  filters the channel list somewhat.
