Would it be possible to create a new channel mode to disallow channel notices (via Bahamut and ChanServ with mlock)? Popular channels and some help channels are getting bombarded with bots sending channel notices (en mass). If possible, it would be a nice tool to have. Thanks, PapaSmurf

Hi all, I'm normally one to shoot down and argue against additional channel modes, but I actually like this one as it makes channel management much easier. --FDSA ----- Original message -----

This would be possible (technically), say channel mode +N (to correspond with the channel mode +n disallowing messages/notices from people who are not in the channel). srd On 20 Feb 2012, at 17:51, PapaSmurf <freedried@yahoo.com> wrote:

Given the purpose of NOTICE, this would not be recommended. The spammers would just switch to PRIVMSG. I would suggest other mitigations such as use of the +b (or +m) channel modes. RFC1459; "The NOTICE message is used similarly to PRIVMSG. The difference between NOTICE and PRIVMSG is that automatic replies must never be sent in response to a NOTICE message. This rule applies to servers too - they must not send any error reply back to the client on receipt of a notice. The object of this rule is to avoid loops between a client automatically sending something in response to something it received." -- -JH

Precisely. This idea has come up in the past. The issue is that NOTICE and PRIVMSG (ie, any other channel message) are effectively _identical_ in function. Users are being spammed with channel notices or channel messages are experiencing the same problem: users flooding the channel. The actions should also be the same. We provide plenty of methods of dealing with flooding, and the only difference between a privmsg flooder and a notice flooder is the presentation those messages get in the client. Please use existing tools. We won't be adding a mode to block notices. -epiphani
